ACTOPAN

The former Augustinian convent of San Nicolás de Tolentino de Actopan is the most important historical monument in the state of Hidalgo. Do you know it? From an architectural and pictorial point of view, the ex-convent of San Nicolás de Tolentino is one of the greatest examples of 16th century New Spanish art. The open chapel has a 17-meter-span entrance arch and an eccentric Mudejar style tower, as well as some interesting paintings illustrating the Old Testament and the torments of hell in the sacristy and choir. On the walls of the staircase that gives access to the second floor, there are paintings representing saints, cardinals, bishops, doctors and Augustinian patriarchs surrounded by friezes with heraldic animals and garlands. The convent of San Miguel Arcángel, is a solid Augustinian construction of tezontle and pink quarry dating from 1550. Inside, paintings are exhibited that describe fantastic scenes totally alien to any religious convention. Do not miss it!
